Supporting WYNGS
Please remember WYNGS in your charitable giving. We rely on individuals, foundations and businesses to support our AIMS Program, which helps paralyzed individuals with their immediate quality-of-life needs. WYNGS also offers Peer Counseling and sponsors English and Spanish Support Group Meetings at widespread locations. We are an all-volunteer organization, including our Program Director, who is in the office every week to answer questions and provide assistance. Your tax-deductible gift to WYNGS will make a crucial difference in the lives of people who are rebuilding their lives after a spinal cord injury. Thank you.
AIMS Program
The AIMS (Awards in Motion to Succeed) Program of WYNGS provides financial stipends, donated equipment, consumable supplies, and personal and professional services to assist spinal cord injury (SCI) survivors. Very few families have the means for the necessary high cost equipment such as wheelchairs, hands-free, voice-activated cellular telephones and ramping to make a home wheelchair accessible. We rely on individuals, businesses and foundations for the resources AIMS disburses to persons in need. Donations range from cash to pay for emergency rent and attendant care, goods such as computers and hand controls for vehicles, storage space for belongings, to bathroom equipment and school tuition. AIMS awards many stipends ranging from $500 to $2000 every year, as well as donated goods and services.
“Turning Points” Peer Counselors
This specially trained group of volunteers are all at least two years post-injury people living with SCI. Following many hours of pre-service training, they provide one-on-one, in-hospital, bedside, individual and small group counseling to recent spinal cord injury survivors, as well as peer support group facilitation at various community venues.
WYNGS Support Groups
These support groups are currently held at four area hospitals, providing people whose lives have changed as a result of spinal cord injury, including families and friends, with information about resources, emotional support in a sympathetic environment, idea sharing, experience sharing opportunities, and a forum for discussing individuals goals.
Information and Referral
This aspect of WYNGS is a crucial function in the community. Volunteers staff the Call Center, located at the WYNGS office in Panorama City three days each week from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm. Callers include persons newly disabled, persons with long-term disability, family members, friends, social workers, therapists, physicians and lawyers. The calls most frequently received involve a request for information or help with funding.
