Would you like to donate your used vehicle or medical equipment to WYNGS, in order to fund the necessities of life for people who are living with spinal cord injury?
Commonly asked questions:
Will I get a tax receipt for my donation?
- As a non-profit organization, and the official L.A. Chapter of the National Spinal Cord Injury Association, WYNGS will issue a tax (deduction) receipt for your donation. When you donate a vehicle or equipment, WYNGS will record the make, model, year and condition, and any special features.
- As the donor, you are responsible for determining the value of the equipment or vehicle. IRS suggests that you note similar items for sale in magazines, thrift shops, and the amount paid /amount of use, to determine the fair market value.
- When the value is in excess of $5,000, the IRS requires the donor to obtain an appraisal on the donated item.
How do I make a donation of equipment or a vehicle?
- Contact our office at (818) 267-3031 to arrange pick up and transportation.
- WYNGS will give you a letter of thanks/receipt, and the IRS Form #8283 you will need to file your donation at tax time.
When I donate my used medical equipment, what does WYNGS do with it?
- We store it in donated space until we have a suitable applicant who needs the equipment and cannot afford to buy it. Then, we donate it to that needy person.
When I donate my adapted van, does WYNGS give it to someone who needs a van?
- Although we would like to be able to do this, there are many reasons why we cannot. Vehicles adapted for wheelchair use and non-adapted vehicles will be sold at auction by WYNGS to help people who are living with SCI. We can easily store many pieces of medical equipment in donated space, but vans take up a bit more room and are highly specific in their suitability. WYNGS strives to provide financial assistance to people with real and immediate needs, and the money raised through the donation of vehicles can purchase lots of medical equipment, medical supplies, ramps, and other necessities, as well as educational equipment such as voice-activated computers.
If I know someone with SCI who is struggling financially and cannot afford to buy necessary items, can I request that WYNGS use my donation to help that person?
- Donations made to a non-profit organization such as WYNGS cannot be directed toward a specific person. But, if there is a particular aspect of WYNGS you wish to support, we can honor your request. For example, you might like the funds to go towards the purchase of medical equipment for a needy person, or a computer for a student living with spinal cord injury. Perhaps you would like to see your contribution foster our support groups or the peer counselor program? We maintain confidentiality, but we can tell you how your gift was used and what difference it made for that person.
- If you know of someone who needs WYNGS help, please ask that person to get in touch with us. One branch of WYNGS is our AIMS Program. (Awards in Motion to Succeed) It is through this program that WYNGS evaluates the immediate need for financial assistance or equipment. Application to AIMS can be made through our website at here.
